What I have done in the past:
Admitted in 1998, I worked for a large commercial firm in Auckland CBD. Four years later it was time to get overseas. I wanted to do something a little different. As a result I worked "up north" in the commercial property team of a law firm in Nottingham, qualifying as an English solicitor and becoming an associate of the firm in the process. Over the eight years I worked there, I established a very loyal client base with a mix of commercial investment, banking and development clients.
My approach to working with clients:
The key point for me is to get to know your clients and their business. I pride myself on the fact that I have the trust of my clients and work closely with them to achieve the ideal commercial outcome. Equally, property law in New Zealand can be technical. A practical approach must be balanced with the need to thoroughly guide and advise your clients to ensure they are fully protected and appreciate any risks.
What I enjoy at work
I have always enjoyed working in a boutique firm - you gain experience in a hugely diverse range of work and get to know your colleagues at a level not always available at larger firms. It keeps you on your toes, but it also keeps things interesting!
What I enjoy out of work
After a long stint in the UK, New Zealand's lifestyle is amazing, so I would have to say anything with water and a beach. I have windsurfed for many years and try to get out on the harbour whenever conditions allow. I must admit however, that having lived away from the coast for while, I am a little rusty!
