I have been engaged in legal practice for more than 25 years. Most of that time was spent at one of New Zealand's leading commercial law firms in their Auckland CBD office. There I was responsible for managing the relationship with a major client. I enjoyed the opportunity to work on numerous major and innovative land development projects, dealing with complex and interesting legal and commercial issues to achieve the results desired by the clients. In late 2004 I decided it was time to change direction and take time out to discover whether or not there was "life beyond the office". I travelled the world and spent some time in London working as a para-legal until my return home in 2010 to start working in the legal profession again, albeit with a different emphases.
I think it is important to get to know our clients and their business, to be considered part of the team. We must be proactive and meet our client's needs and add value to their business. To that end, I endeavour to gain the trust and confidence of our clients so that I am able to work closely with them to hopefully achieve the best possible commercial outcome in any given project. Property law in New Zealand can be very complex, and sound technical and legal knowledge is always necessary to ensure that good commercial results are met.
I have always enjoyed working with people and being engaged in problem solving. Taking a role in a smaller boutique firm like Burton Partners gives me the opportunity to expand on the experience already gained and to work more closely with my colleagues in a greater range of projects, and at a level not always possible within a larger law firm structure. We have more direct and immediate contact with the firm's clients.
I simply like to enjoy life to the fullest extent possible without going overboard. I enjoy traveling to remote and different destinations, but I always like to come home. New Zealand is such a beautiful place to live and work. Auckland in particular offers so much for someone like me who tries to blend outdoor activities with the theatre and the arts. I try to continually expand and update my knowledge of New Zealand wine. I will have a go at most things however, if you ever have the opportunity to join me for a round of golf you must be prepared for a long and arduous day. You will, however, on a stroke for stroke basis obtain great value for your Green Fees.
